Student Opportunity - UX Design Co-op

Orbital Stack is a growing tech start-up that is taking RWDI’s world-leading expertise in climate-focused design analysis and turning it into software for the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry.

Our software helps architects and engineers design livable, climate-savvy buildings that leverage the local climate to their advantage rather than suffer at its mercy, creating spaces where people love to spend time. We are doing this by delivering high fidelity simulations and intuitive visualizations to customers directly in the AEC industry as well as through the consulting services of RWDI.

We have recently launched an AI based wind estimation tool that completely transforms the AEC design. By delivering answers in seconds and at a fraction of the cost of historical approaches, designers will now be able to consider the impacts of the environment sooner than ever before and apply it to not only the most prestigious buildings in the world, but also to the local developments that we all interact with every day. As we continue to add features based on this technology, we are looking to help in designing the user experience of our growing software platform.

Orbital Stack’s (RWDI) is currently accepting applications from students for a four-month or eight-month Co-op, beginning January 2024. The position can report to either our office in Toronto or Guelph, with some flexibility to work remotely.

We are looking for a self-motivated and creative co-op student to help our team continue to help in designing the user experience of our software platform. This will be a hands-on role for someone who is passionate about design and has basic understanding and/or keen interest in architecture, engineering, geography/GIS, or Geospatial Mapping.

Reports to the General Manager of Orbital Stack but gets day-to-day direction and guidance from the Product Designer.

Duties:

• Taking responsibility of designing features of a web-based, 3D visualization solution
• Working with our lead designer to develop a longer-term vision for the application.
• Working with development team to refine features based on compromises between desired user experience and capabilities of the development tool kit.
• Occasionally helping with other tasks including graphic design, web site maintenance, and help site maintenance and authoring.
• Help with the ideation process, producing user flows and wireframes for new software features.
• Other duties as assigned.

Skills:

• Previous experience in web-based application design
• Experience with 3D modeling software would be an asset.
• Intermediate to senior student
• A basic understanding and education in the UX and UI principles.
• Love to learn new things, especially when it comes to technology.
• Experience with 3D modelling software (Rhino, Revit, Sketchup, AutoCAD) would be an asset.
• Self-sufficient worker
• Experience with word, PowerPoint (or similar) and ideally some web authoring environments (like WordPress)
• Ability to work well in a team environment and take guidance when required.
• Intermediate Figma knowledge aiming to iterate in components/mockups development and user flows.
• Intermediate Illustrator understanding, to help manipulate design files.
• Basic knowledge of HTML and CSS
• A portfolio with a UX/UI case is an asset.

Salary: Commensurate with experience
