Job Description

Manulife is a leading international financial services group serving over 33 million customers across the globe. We are hard at work to transform our organization into a digital, customer-centric market leader – evolving our customer interactions into innovative, elegant, and highly functional digital experiences delivering high value.

The barrier to the financial services industry can be complex but it doesn’t have to be; our mission is to simplify financial services by making decisions easier and lives better.

The role:

Our Human Centered Design team is looking for a Mobile Product Designer, to help create effortless mobile experiences that touch millions of Canadians every day.

In this role, you will help identify the right problems to solve and design elegant solutions through an iterative, data-informed process. You’ll have a balance of an analytical mindset, strong creative vision, and working knowledge of mobile app development. You’ll be a part of the larger Canadian Human-Centered Design team but embedded into a business unit where you’ll help craft the day-to-day mobile experience with the support of a small, tight-knit group of multi-functional designers.

We’re big on collaboration, open communication and getting things done right. We’re looking to build and grow alongside talented, ambitious people who are driven to create a positive impact on the lives of Canadians.

You’ll be…

  • Primarily focused on our core Manulife Group Benefits mobile Android and iOS experiences
  • Working with Product Owners and Engineering to balance the right decisions for the product with the right decisions for the users
  • A part of the Human Centered Design team, working with your fellow designers, researchers and strategists to advance a customer-centric, omni-channel vision that solves our customers’ problems and enables trust and satisfaction in the mobile space
  • Ensuring every interaction we deliver to our users utilizes inclusive design and meets accessibility standards
  • Considering customers interactions and journeys and act as an advocate for their constant improvement through accessible and inclusive design principles and implementation.
  • Conducting research with users, distilling the data and communicating insights
  • Working in an agile environment, enabling quick prototype-test-iterate cycles
  • Facilitating design conversations and articulating the rationale for design decisions
  • Contributing to the establishment and evolution of our mobile design system
  • Helping build our HCD design practice, developing the craft and culture

You are:

  • Committed to quality – With a strong appetite to deliver only the best-in-class, compelling user experiences, you lead the charge on design.
  • Confident, with strong design opinions – You are the expert and can gracefully defend your design decisions.
  • Data-driven, user-focus – You understand and appreciate the process of identifying user needs, back your work up with research and challenge opinion-driven decisions.
  • Deeply empathetic – You can protect the interests of users whilst balancing a deep understanding of stakeholder and business goals.
  • A realistic visionary – You balance scope, limitations, and future-thinking to think big on possibilities and pivot as it makes sense to.
  • Self-driven and own your craft – You have a passion for solving core product problems while owning all sides of UX and UI (strategy, IA, UX research, interface design and interaction design).
  • A strong communicator – You can effectively articulate and share your work with small to large groups of designers and non-designers alike.
  • A team player – With low-ego and the desire to strengthen our high-performing team, you actively contribute to a culture of collaboration, transparency and growth.

 We’re looking for:

  • 2+ years of mobile product design experience. Figma expertise is required.
  • Work experience designing mobile applications for both Android and iOS and working knowledge of the development process.
  • High proficiency in human-centered design principles, visual design theory and application, usability and accessibility.
  • A deep understanding of end-to-end iterative digital product design process, including how to validate user needs, create user flows, content modelling, wireframing and prototyping, user testing, and high-fidelity visuals.
  • Experience collaborating with multiple disciplines (such as Product, Engineering, Content) within Agile project methodology
  • Knowledge of Native design systems (Material 3 and Swift UI)
  • Experience with design systems.

What’s in it for you?

Be a part of something bigger:

  • As a designer at Manulife, you’ll be working on digital products and services used by millions of Canadians. Your work will make a difference.
  • Human-Centered Design – It isn’t just preached here; it’s embedded into our company’s mission to make decisions easier and lives better.
  • Diversity & inclusion – We are on a journey to address the needs of our diverse customers, employees and communities. We are committed to inclusion everywhere
  • Investment in community – Society’s challenges are our challenges, too. That’s why we share our time, talents and financial resources with local communities around the world.

Your wellbeing matters:

  • Manulife offers flexible packages for medical, dental and other health benefits for employees and their families.
  • Exclusive employee rates on Manulife products and services and partnership discounts.
  • Group RRSP (Registered Retirement Savings Plan) and stock options available.
  • Access to mental health resources and support for employees.
  • Enjoy Fuel up Fridays: an initiative where every second Friday of the month is dedicated to learning and continuous improvement.

Opportunities for growth:

  • Be a part of a team of Designers, Researchers and Strategists where you can lean on others’ expertise, feedback and grow together.
  • Training and Career Development – Access career training and development tools and resources to grow your career.
  • Conference and learning opportunities

To apply:

We’d like to see a portfolio of recent case studies that show...

  • Your depth of experience and knowledge applied in the real world on shipped mobile experiences and/or products.
  • Your experience working with other designers, engineers and business teams.
  • Your approach to problem definition, problem solving and the ways you balanced and/or negotiated business and technical needs.
