Hey, Hi, Hello! 👋

My name is Connor Wilson. I’m the Founder and CEO of Pilot.

We’re a travel tech startup with the mission of helping people like you discover and share memorable experiences in the real world, so you and others can live a happier, more fulfilling life.

Why you should work at Pilot 🙋‍♀️

Remember that project back in school or from earlier in your life? The one you really enjoyed and felt passionate about? It didn't feel like work, did it? It was fun. Well your job shouldn’t feel like work either. Especially considering we spend most of our lives at our jobs.

So, if you think you’d like working at a company whose very purpose is to give you and others the absolute best life possible, in the most fun way possible, working on cool things with cool people, to help people have an awesome time and make memories…

…well then Pilot might just be the place for you.

It’s embedded into who we are. That’s why we have a public 21-page culture code. Read it here to see if we vibe: https://bit.ly/3KmavZF

What We Offer:

🌴 Near Total Autonomy and Freedom: Work when & where you want, with a 4-day work week if you finish your work in time.

✈️ It’s Travel, So It’s Super Fun and Exciting: You’ll get the excitement of being a part of building something new for the world, with consistent work at a sufficiently funded and recognized company but with little risk in the near term.

📖 Your Head Will Feel Like This: 🤯 (In a Good Way): You’ll learn more about business, startups, and entrepreneurship than you ever will from a bigger or more traditional company. You’ll work with incredibly talented people (who value humility) across departments and lead challenging projects in an environment where it’s okay to fail with lots of mentorship.

🏆 You’ll Look Great, and Feel Greater: Not only will it look great on your resume, but you’ll work at a well respected startup brand, getting the respect and networking value that comes with that. You’ll be encouraged to speak up, have an opinion, and will be recognized for your contributions in a flat hierarchy where everyone is treated fairly.

🎊 Work with People Who All Want to Be Your Friend: You’ll make a positive impact with your work on the world, be genuinely cared for and make new work-friends (we actually hang out). And, you’ll get lots of support in a company that actually cares about mental health.

🧳 We do paid travel benefits on occasion for training and research purposes. So far, we’ve paid for team trips to and around Thailand, Taiwan, Colombia, Portugal, Spain, Hungary, Turkey, India, San Francisco, Vancouver, Toronto, Boston (upcoming), and more. These have been very valuable experiences for our team and we will be doing more of them. We’ll be doing something fun and international most likely for our team retreat as well this year.

“Okay, but what even is Pilot?” 🤔

Great question. Glad you asked.

🌱 We incorporated on Sixto de Mayo 2020. We missed Cinco de Mayo by one day and are still bitter about it. We spent the time since then iterating towards our current platform.

We’ve come a long way since then. We’re building Pilot to be a Collaborative Travel Hub, powered by AI, to help groups (of 2 or more) discover, plan, book, and share experiences with the people they care about. A shareable platform like Notion or Google Docs with social functionality, not a social network.

And it seems to be working. After launching our beta web app in 2022, after only ~25 or so month, in 2023 we reached:

  • 🔥 25,000 registered users with 20,000 trips planned (~66x the number of trips a typical SMB travel agency plans per year, with no travel agents)
  • 🕸️ Our content seen in search engines +100mil times
  • ❤️ 73% percent of users, if asked if they could no longer use Pilot, saying they would be “very disappointed”, where 40% is typically considered the benchmark leading indicator for product-market-fit.

All this without any ads; it’s completely organic growth.

Because of that, others noticed too:

  • 💸 We raised about $1.2mil CAD from investors and plan to raise more
  • 📰 We were featured by the press in TechCrunch, Forbes, Yahoo Finance, Vancouver Tech Journal, and others.
  • 🏆We’re a top 3 winner of BC Tech’s “Startup of the Year” award.
  • 🙌 And we were supported by Canada’s most prestigious startup organizations (and some beyond), such as:
  • Next Canada, mentored by hundred-millionaire-net-worth entrepreneurs, and world leaders in AI research
  • Creative Destruction Lab, basically “Survivor meets Shark Tank"
  • New Ventures BC, who listed us a top 10 startup
  • Techcrunch Disrupt Battlefield, which “showcases the top 200 startups from around the globe” in San Francisco
  • And the C100 (a fellowship of the top Canadian founders, connecting them with top investors in San Francisco)

The role. The goal. 🛣️

But enough about us. Here’s what we’re looking for from you:

It’s very simple. We want someone to help us design our web and mobile applications and our brand. The areas we most need in the immediate future are building out our iOS and Android apps, but there’s lots of work on our web app as well. We’re planning a design system and brand revamp soon as well, so you’ll be deeply involved in that if you join.

Candidate Traits:

Independent and Collaborative Work

  • Able to think, work, and learn independently, but also a team player who collaborates well with others.
  • Self-reliant and able to drive themselves forward without relying on management.
  • Enjoys working with others in an open, collaborative manner.

Communication Skills

  • Can convey complex topics simply.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate well with engineers.

Empathy and User Interaction

  • Has a good understanding of human psychology and a strong sense of empathy.
  • Highly empathetic, not afraid to be frequently talking to users both in person and online.

Passion for Learning and Travel

  • Very curious, loves learning, and does it in their spare time.
  • Loves travel and is an experienced traveler.
  • Passionate about travel and positively impacting the lives of others.

Education and Design Expertise

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Design or a related discipline.
  • Understands and expresses brand through product choices.
  • Critical and opinionated in their design.
  • Pays great attention to detail, especially in design and critical thinking.

Product Development and Methodology

  • Follows lean product methodology and adapts to a fast product development process.
  • Stays focused in a fast-paced environment.

Technical Knowledge and Data Analytics

  • Understands and can interpret data analytics.
  • Has a general working knowledge of the latest tech, app, and design trends to apply them.
  • Understands the basics of branding and its role in product development.
  • Experience using Figma or similar tools

Further Benefits:

  • 🌱 Any ownership stake you earn could one day be worth millions of dollars.
  • ⭐ You’ll become a far more employable person (with great references), able to earn a higher salary at a better job if not at Pilot (we prioritize your professional development), by signaling yourself as a higher potential individual than your peers, accelerating your career path.
  • 🏠 You won’t have to worry about finding a decent paying or flexible job any more, especially in this economy, which is hard enough as is having recently had industry-wide layoffs. You’ll have more money and autonomy to get the most of this time in your life (i.e., have fun).
  • 🙅‍♀️ You’ll gain an understanding of what “good” and “bad” looks like for different things and what they entail in a startup and companies in general, helping you to better life and career choices sooner while avoiding ones you may otherwise regret later, and helping you to start your own startup or profit from them later.
  • 🥳 You’ll make friends and professional connections that will be valuable all your life if you nurture them.
  • 💪 You’ll gain the envy and respect of your peers for having a highly desirable and “cool” job at a very trendy high-growth travel tech startup leveraging AI that targets those very same people in its marketing (meaning they’ll recognize it).
  • 🔖 You’ll make great memories, getting the “classic” startup experience, fun socials, and opportunities to bond with and represent the team at occasional events or team trips.
  • 🧠 You’ll learn how to think, an abstract concept that seems vague but is so incredibly important. We’ll teach you how to analyze problems and create solutions using first principles, logic, mental models, frameworks, and cognitive biases. You’ll become a consummate professional, which will help you improve other aspects of your life, from relationships to your socioeconomic status. We’ll help you grow as a person into the best version of yourself that others will admire.
